Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture

Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture
This revised edition of Reproduction, one of social science's most frequently cited texts incorporates a re-issue of the original text with a new introduction by Pierre Bourdieu. A key work in the development of a social scientific analysis of culture, Reproduction connects cultural phenomena firmly to the structural characteristics of a society, society and culture and shows how the culture produced by this structure in turn helps to maintain it. The way in which the ruling ideas of a social system are related to structures of class, production society and culture and power, society and culture and how these are legitimated society and culture and perpetuated, is fundamental to the sociological project. In Reproduction Pierre Bourdieu society and culture and Jean-Claude Passeron develop an analysis of education in its broadest sense, encompassing more than the process of formal education. They show how education carries an essentially arbitrary cultural scheme which is actually, though not in appearance, based on power. More widely, the reproduction of culture through education is shown to play a key part in the reproduction of the whole social system. The analysis is carried through not only in theoretical terms but through the development of empirically testable propositions within the wider framework of the historical transformation of the educational system. Reproduction in Education, Society society and culture and Culture was nominated a `citation classic' by the Institute for Scientific Information Social Science Citation Index in 1988. It is essential reading for students of sociology, education, social theory society and culture and cultural studies. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

The Consumer Society

The Consumer Society
This is the first English-language translation of Jean Baudrillard?s contemporary classic on the sociology of consumption. Originally published in 1970, the book was one of the first to focus on the processes society and culture and meaning of consumption in contemporary culture. At a time when others were fixated with the production process, Baudrillard could be found making the case that consumption is now the axis of culture. He demonstrates how consumption is related to the goal of economic growth society and culture and he maps out a social theory of consumption. Many of the themes that would later make Baudrillard famous are sketched out here for the first time. In particular, his concepts of simulation society and culture and the simulacrum receive their earliest systematic treatment. Written at a time when Baudrillard was moving away from both Marxism society and culture and institutional sociology, the book is more systematic than his later works. He is still pursuing the task of locating consumption in culture society and culture and society. So the reader will find here his most organized discussion of mass media culture, the meaning of leisure, society and culture and anomie in affluent society. There is also a fascinating chapter on the body that shows yet again Baudrillard's extraordinary prescience in flagging the importance of vital subjects in contemporary culture long before his colleagues. Baudrillard is widely acclaimed as a key thinker in sociology, communication, society and culture and cultural studies. This book makes available to English-speaking readers one of his most important works. It will be devoured by the steadily expanding circle of Baudrillard scholars, society and culture and it will also be required reading for students of the sociology of culture, communication, society and culture and cultural studies.
